In 1902, our first Committee bought the premises at 3 Gibson Place, a house previously owned by Mrs Margaret Sang, for £1300.

Later that year, on the ground between the house and The Links, extension work was carried out in order that the premises would comfortably accommodate all of the 100 citizens of the town who had indicated their intention of becoming members.

This Lounge is part of that work.

The architect, Mr Gillespie, designed this 'General Room', lining it with lockers for the use of the Members, modelling it on 'The Big Room' in the R&A Clubhouse.
When the Clubhouse was officially opened on Thursday 17 July 1902, one month after its rather ambitious target date, it also had a spacious Dining Room, Reading Room, large Billiards Room and Card Room.

A few weeks later, a large Smokeroom-Clubroom, Toilets and Changing Rooms, and an open Verandah were also completed.

All of this extension work and furnishings came within the Committee's budget of £1600, which had been previously promised to them by their potential members.

In 1960, a section of wall was removed to create the Lounge's now familiar L shape. This linked The Main Lounge to our Reading Room, previously known as The Blue Room, a lounge used by the wives of Members.

Its other walls carry the names and photographs of our Founder Members, Past Captains, Club Champions, Life and Honorary Members, and notable golfing members.

The Trophy Cabinet above the fireplace and the Bar are also more recent additions.

The view from The North Window, much enjoyed by Old Tom Morris - across the 1st and 18th fairways of the Old Course, towards the Links and the beach, to the far hills of Angus to the north - is wonderful.
